Personally I still find Windows to be the best, despite all its flaws... Linux just isn't well developed enough for a live desktop environment yet.
What do you guys think?
I do prefeer Windows as well, linux is not so user friendly & is not well supported a lot user-end software...
as my personal point of view linux is more intented for server side apps

Hi,
As much as I hate IE in Windows, Windows Operating System is overall pretty user friendly and most of us are just too used to it to switch, along with compatibility issues with other programs if switching to OSX or Linux for example.
Especially with the new Windows Vista coming out, can't wait to upgrade to it ;)
Cheers

I tried out linux a few times, but I had such a hard time finding drivers for a usb wireless network card, that I gave up.
Plus my pro-audio soundcard doesn't work with linux (barely works with windows...pos...), and the method for running macromedia studio (dreamweaver, flash, fireworks) is just too cumbersome. You have to simulate a windows environment.
Since I've replaced my wireless card with a pci version, I use my onboard audio more and more, and I am using ssh to access the server more and more, I might give it another go...
We'll see.
It will be a while for me before I upgrade to vista. In fact, I don't think I will upgrade. I'll just wait till I get a new pc, then turn my current one into a linux box and throw a KVM switch between them. :D
P.S. Ditto on the hating IE for windows thing. If everyone would use firefox, there would be world peace.

I had forgotten about this thread...
Since writing my post, I've bought two laptops with Vista. I'm pretty happy with them. I've also installed Ubuntu Linux on both, and set up an Edubuntu Server at work.
I'm slowly becoming a Linux geek...

For newbies looking to try linux, one of the easiest and user friendly with one click updates and addons is freespire. It doesn't have all the complex things some of the other flavors of linux has, but this is definately an easy to use, install, config, for the beginer. It found my wireless card automatically, setup my internet connection you name it. And it looks pretty decent too.

Windows Vista FTW!
I still love Windoze, now even more with the release of Vista (although I do not own Vista). After trying it out at a local PC store, I'm in love. :)
Linux is nice. I think personally, I would choose Fedora Core 5 over FreeSpire (off shoot of Linspire Home).

Ubuntu. Have it on 3 systems at home...would be 4 if I could talk my GF into giving up Windows :)

You could always repartition her drive and install it on there. Then you/she could dual boot the system (Wiindows for her, and Ubuntu for you).
I'm on good ol' XP.. probably stuck on it forever

Prefer XP Pro for my everyday use (gaming, etc, even my coding majority of the time is done in windows)
But my fav linux distros are:
Ubuntu (Didn't start using till about a year ago, but is a nice OS, starting to like it alot)
XandrOS (never understood exactly why I like it, but I like it)
Mandriva (Before when it was Mandrake, it was my first Linux OS back in early versions of it, so even after many changes I still have some love for it.)
Have tried many many many linux distros, can say out of all, those are my 3 favs.

Even though I use WinXP quite a bit lately, I have to say that I miss Sabayon Linux, and of all the linux distros I tried out, it feels more complete, and at least comes with most of the codecs and libraries, so you don't have to keep downloading stuff like with (K)(X)Ubuntu

Ubuntu is my primary OS at home. I use it on my MythTV PVR/Media server, my primary desktop, and 2 laptops I play around with. Loaded up Gentoo on my iBook (Clamshell, 1999) but I never got a GUI loaded...it was taking days to install and I got bored ;).
My primary desktop is a dual boot and also runs XP for my games. Cedega does a OK job with the games, but it is just easier to run them on XP. I also have an XP virtual pc (Virtualbox) for other applications that need Windows, but do not need the full OS. That one is running Altiris SVS to virtualize the applications. It is a nice utility, one our works is looking at as a possible method of deploying applications. For home use it allows you to turn on and off entire installations of software with a couple of clicks.

Windows XP Professional here. Especially since XP WILL get DX10 Support.
Windows Vista is too much of a resource hog and is still a bit on the buggy side.
Linux is a good slipstreamed OS, pretty much any core, some better than others though. But without the overall APP/Game support, it's kinda pointless to the average user
OSX: Probably the BEST OS out there right now for the average user. And now that it's X86 compliant, god bless Apple.

What do you guys think?
I question this argument every time it comes up.
There is an OS for your TASK.
think about that.
Linux, enjoying yourself, 3D, editing shiz.
Windows, editing video, editing audio
Mac, who knows what those freaks do, lol, but I LOVE EM, cause I know I can run a one button mouse!
FBSD, doing the security guard blitz?
... comeon you know I am right.
