I was trying to install a blog script and realized there's no XSLT availability on my server.

Outstanding Requirements

Symphony needs the following requirements satisfied before installation can proceed.

XSLT Processor
Symphony needs an XSLT processor such as LibXSLT or Sablotron to build pages.

Will Cirtex implement an XSLT processor? I'm sure I'm not the only person on your many servers that would like this feature.

What is an XSLT processor? Any link to information on it?

From W3.org

This specification defines the syntax and semantics of XSLT, which is a language for transforming XML documents into other XML documents.

XSLT is designed for use as part of XSL, which is a stylesheet language for XML. In addition to XSLT, XSL includes an XML vocabulary for specifying formatting. XSL specifies the styling of an XML document by using XSLT to describe how the document is transformed into another XML document that uses the formatting vocabulary.

XSLT is also designed to be used independently of XSL. However, XSLT is not intended as a completely general-purpose XML transformation language. Rather it is designed primarily for the kinds of transformations that are needed when XSLT is used as part of XSL.

Also,

What is XSL?

XSL is a language for expressing style sheets. An XSL style sheet is, like with CSS, a file that describes how to display an XML document of a given type. XSL shares the functionality and is compatible with CSS2 (although it uses a different syntax). It also adds:

* A transformation language for XML documents: XSLT. Originally intended to perform complex styling operations, like the generation of tables of contents and indexes, it is now used as a general purpose XML processing language. XSLT is thus widely used for purposes other than XSL, like generating HTML web pages from XML data.
* Advanced styling features, expressed by an XML document type which defines a set of elements called Formatting Objects, and attributes (in part borrowed from CSS2 properties and adding more complex ones.

I'm no expert and might not even use this blog script (Symphony), but either way it sounds interesting and thought you Cirtex guys could take a look.

Here are the links to the quoted pages.

Hello.
Please provide us with your server name so the admins can do this as soon as possible! This will save your time and there time! Thanks.

Well I thought this should be implemented on all servers, not just mine so that it could benefit anyone else out there that's interested in working with XSL or XSLT.

I'm on Edgy.

They will implement it on your server only to start with. then if it proves sucessful and doesnt damage speeds it will be added to more.

What script are you using that specifically requires this out of curiosity? I've only used one in particular that requires it Dolphin, a spin off of a myspace community type of thing, but only required for their forums which really isn't that good anyway. Other forums are integratable with it without the xslt processor. But then again I'm sure there are other scripts out there that will require it in the future as well.

XSLT support is not enabled by default in WHM/cPanel. The PHP extension is available in WHM/cPanel as XsltSablot (when rebuilding Apache). But it's obviously up to the admins whether they would want to rebuild Apache and enable this functionality. :)

XSLT seems to be gaining popularity recently. I wouldn't expect to see it enabled network wide anytime soon, as it requires rebuilding apache/php with xsl and that can slow a server down and even take it down or offline depending on speed for 20-30+ minutes. It might be a consideration as new servers are added to setup the build with it to begin with.

Seems like this tends to be an apache2 preference as well. And since it looks like we all have apache 1.3, php 4, and mysql 4. I would think maybe in the future as new servers are setup with apache 2+ php 5+ and mysql 5 it might be included. Probably a while out yet.

But if or when they go vps you can rebuild your own apache, php, and mysql with whatever mods you desire if root access is included which every vps provider I've dealt with allows. Hopefully this also happens soon.
