I have a couple of simple sites on a cirtex semi-dedicated account and I want to add one more, but I just am not sure where to start. I want to add a site for my entire family, where numerous users can upload vids and pics to share with others and also post news/blog items. I have a video sharing site already, but that just wouldn't work for pics and news/blog items. Suggestions please?

You could try WordPress and/or Gallery if you want something simple that your family can use to upload pictures and type out blogs. Both should be available for you to use within Fantastico.

Ya, I thought about that, but I want basically each family to have their own account or page, so maybe the home page is a family tree with all the individuals names as links and then when you click on a name it takes them to their own page with blogs, pics, vids, etc. I would like to stick to freeware, but I will spend some money on a program or script if it does everything I need it too. Any more ideas out there now that I have described it a little better?

Okay, I understand.

Here's what you can do (from my point of view):

Option 1

Setup subdomains for each of your family members. You'll link to these subdomains from the "main page".

You should be able to setup Gallery / Wordpress into each of these subdomains. If I remember correctly, Gallery uses a database, so you'll need to create a new database for each Gallery install or use a database you have set up already.

If you decide to use a database you have set up already, you'll need to make sure each Gallery (for each of your family members) that uses the database writes their database entires with a unique (different) prefix. That way, each separate Gallery install is not overwriting/replacing data from another Gallery or a forum that is using that same database.

Now each family member has their "own" page (via the subdomains) and they each have a Gallery install of their own.

Option 2

Disclaimer: I'm not sure if the following is correct since I have not used Gallery in a while.

You could have one Gallery install and have each of your family members create a Gallery account. From there, you can link to their Gallery account "photo albums" instead of having to create separate Gallery installs (and all of that other stuff).

I hope that made some sense. :)

Ya I'm following ya. That sure sounds like it would work, but I see a few more problems. I'm not talking about just my immediate family, but the entire tree, hundreds of people. I would like to spend some time setting up the site and then have it nearly self supporting as I don't have the time. Also, wordpress and gallery are pretty simple, but I fear that some of the cuetips (old retired people, white hair - white shoes...my father told me that one lol) would struggle with it. With that in mind I have kind of switched gears and have been leaning toward a genealogy script. I have googled it and found some, just not any that I am happy with yet. If anyone knows of a script that sounds like it will do what I am looking for or has suggestions as Andan has, I am very appreciative. Thanks for the help Andan.

Here is one example of what I am looking for http://www.lythgoes.net/genealogy/software.php
This script has some of the things I am looking for, I like how it shows the tree with the links, but it seems to be missing how each individual can update their own page. The pages must also have their own ftp accounts so any of the members only have access to change their own page.

Hmm, you could try searching for some open source genealogy site building / website building software (you could even use this as your search terms). Unfortunately, I've never had an interest in this particular software or usage, so that's about where I would begin.
