Do Smilies Enhance A Message?

Honestly, do you think adding a smiley to your message makes it more understandable or should you make more effort to write better?

I use them to let the person know I'm just kidding or being funny so they don't get offended.

I'm with Zardac on that. I also find they are pretty good at calming people when they're angry. MOST people can relate with a smiley than they could with what you say.

I love smileys, probably a smiley abuser when it comes to IM/texting.. ^ I agree saves having to write more to get the point across I guess.. and they're cute.

Honestly I hardly use them. I'd rather someone take the time to write properly so i could understand. I guess that's just because I usually do so I expect that they'll reciprocate the favor.
